Medicare, costs and the Safety Net
If you see us often, or several specialists in a year, two safety nets lower your costs once you pass a yearly threshold. Many people never claim what they are entitled to.
Couples and families need to register as a Safety Net family, even if you share a Medicare card. It pools everyone’s costs and takes just a few minutes in Medicare through myGov but it needs to be done every year. Thresholds reset every 1 January.
Medicare Safety Net
Higher rebates on GP, specialist, pathology and imaging costs once you reach the threshold.
PBS Safety Net
Cheaper, or free, prescriptions once you reach the threshold. Ask your pharmacist to track your scripts.
